Position Description

Title:                           Community Assessment Intern

Reports To:                Community Action Researcher

Summary:                  Under the direction of the Community Action Researcher, the Community Intern will conduct telephone interviews, surveys, and focus groups as part of a large-scale community assessment.

The Children’s Planning Council (CPC) is conducting a large-scale community assessment to provide relevant data and information to parents, youth, institutions, and CPC staff and volunteers. The assessment will collect a variety of information about perceptions, assets, and barriers within communities in LA County. The community assessment will yield information for use in community organizing and social change activities. CPC is committed to providing opportunities for growth in knowledge, skills, and experience for residents of LA County. The Community Assessment Intern positions are intended to support the growth of capacity in using research for the benefit of the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Assist in collecting primary data using paper-and-pencil surveys, internet surveys, phone interviews, and focus groups.

·         Perform data entry as required.

·         Assist in maintaining and updating the computerized collection and tracking of relevant data.

·         Work collaboratively with the Community Action Researcher, other interns, with each of the eight regional councils and the American Indian Council, and other volunteers.

·         Coordinate and participate in committee meetings to facilitate the collection and use of data.

·         Assist with maintaining cooperation and participation with collaborating groups and individuals.

·         Perform other duties as assigned.

Ability to:

·         Work collaboratively with a diverse set of community-based organizations, resi­dents, and stakeholders.

·         Be responsive, flexible, and open to new ideas and approaches.

·         Utilize personal computers and related software applications.

·         Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends

·         Travel throughout greater Los Angeles County

Desirable Skills and Characteristics:

·         Strong commitment to diversity and community-based approaches.

·         A good understanding of the political, economic, social, and cultural makeup of Los Angeles County .

·         Strong interpersonal skills coupled with the ability to build effective relationships with a diverse group of community members.

Education Requirements:

·         High School graduate or equivalent experience

Other Requirements:

·         Valid California Drivers License and appropriate auto insurance

·         Able to travel throughout greater Los Angeles County

·         Have regular access to a computer with Microsoft Word and Excel

·         Have high speed internet and access to a phone which can call anywhere in Los Angeles County

·         Bilingual preferred (English and any other language)

Schedule and Compensation:

The Community Assessment Intern position is part-time and requires 15 hours per week until the community assessment is complete (maximum of 4 months). Although the schedule is flexible, evening and weekend hours are required. This position will be paid $10 per hour and work-related expenses will be reimbursed.
